Facts about Bonita
Located in the southern part of San Diego County, Bonita is a census designated place. Geographically, the CDP is found between the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City. At the time of the 2010 census, more than 12,500 people lived in Bonita. As of the 2020 census, that figure was closer to 12,400.
While a CDP, Bonita is also identified as part of what's known as the Lower Sweetwater Valley.
The word Bonita is Spanish for pretty or beautiful. That was the name chosen for a ranch owned by Henry Ernest Cooper, Sr. when it was built in 1884. When a post office was established in the community, Bonita was chosen as the name.
From its early years, the community has been a place where citrus orchards were common. In particular, lemon cultivation has remained a key part of the local economy. The Bonnie Brae Lemon was developed in Bonita.
