Found in San Diego County, Bonsall is a census designated place that's home to more than 4,100 people as of the 2020 census. That's an increase from 2010, when the population was 3,982.
The area was first settled in the latter 19th century. First known as Mount Fairview, the community welcomed a post office in 1871. The post office bore the original name until 1880, when it closed. A new post office opened the following year, and was dubbed the Osgood post office. The name was an attempt to entice Joseph O. Osgood, then a chief engineer with the California Southern Railroad, to build a line through the San Luis Rey River Valley. The name of Bonsall was chosen in 1890, in honor of a local minister, James A. Bonsall.
